Start every request with two shots: a high-resolution close-up of the equipment data plate and a wide "big picture" of the whole equipment pad. That pair gives our counter tech the model, serial, and plumbing context they need to match parts quickly.

Where to look for the right label or feature


Pumps: check the pump housing and motor housing for the nameplate. Use the pump housing serial when possible.


Filters: look on the tank body for the data plate or molded stamping on the shell. Capture lateral or cartridge details if present.


Heaters: photograph the front panel and inside the service door if safe to open. Note any control labels and gas or electrical ratings.


Control boxes and automation: photograph the enclosure label and the base unit. Do not open live electrical panels; an external shot is fine.


Robotic and suction cleaners: capture the model sticker, connection points, and any mounting hardware or swivels.

Start by locking focus and exposure on the plate or part so the camera stops hunting. Use macro mode if your phone has it and avoid digital zoom to preserve detail.


Simple tools to carry

  • Flashlight for directional side lighting to cast shadows into stamped grooves.
  • Piece of white cardstock or paper to bounce or diffuse light and cut glare.
  • Tape measure or ruler to include scale for diameters, cartridge lengths, and bolt spacing.
  • Small tripod or steady surface so you can use longer exposures without blur.
  • Microfiber cloth to clean the camera lens and the part before shooting.

How to photograph measurements, threads, and fittings


Place a ruler or tape next to the part so size is obvious in the frame. For threads, photograph OD for male threads and ID for female threads, and include a close-up that shows the thread profile.


For cartridges, shoot end cap to end cap for total length, plus an OD shot of the body and top opening. For pumps, capture intake and discharge port ODs with a scale in the same plane as the port.


Always take multiple angles so mounting bolt spacing and flange shape are clear. Label files with brand and rough measurements to speed identification at the counter.


Working in tight or reflective spaces


Use side lighting at about 45 to 90 degrees and move the light until grooves cast clear shadows. Diffuse bright lights with paper to avoid hot spots and never rely on the on-camera flash for metal plates.


If space is cramped, steady the phone and take a short video while moving the light to capture the best angle. Then extract the sharpest frame for the counter to review.

Safety-first photos and when to call a pro


Not sure whether to snap photos or call a technician? Play it safe first. Assume wiring is live and avoid touching electrical covers unless you are qualified.


We recommend a quick visual check from a distance and then only photograph what you can see without opening enclosures. If anything looks burnt, wet, or corroded, stop and call for service.


Photograph electrical panels without risking shock


Take a wide shot to show the full equipment pad and conduit entry points. That gives context for how components are arranged.


Then get close-up photos of wire colors and terminal labels from outside the enclosure. Make sure labels and terminal codes are readable in the frame.


Do not open or touch live panels. If you can safely isolate power and verify de-energized with a tester, only then should a qualified person open the box.


Red flags that require immediate professional service

  • Smell of gas, hissing sounds near heaters, or visible soot on burners.
  • Exposed wiring, sparking, or repeated GFCI trips that you can photograph from a safe distance.
  • Persistent major leaks or soil that looks soggy, eroded, or shows sinking deck movement.
  • Loud grinding, screeching, or equipment that runs hot to the touch.

Short diagnostic videos and packing fragile parts


Record short 10 to 20 second clips to capture noises or valve action. Start about 3 to 5 feet away to give context, then move closer to isolate the source.


Avoid digital zoom and narrate what we are hearing or seeing. A clear clip often speeds diagnosis more than many photos.

  • Pack fragile electronics in anti static bags or bubble wrap and add cushioning so parts do not shift.
  • Include desiccant for moisture protection and seal items in a sturdy box.
  • Label the box "Fragile" and note brand and part context on a card inside the package.

For pool cleaners, photograph the unit installed before disassembly. Capture close-ups of worn hoses, broken clips, and drive-train wear points.
