  • Phosphates: If levels exceed about 500 ppb, use a phosphate remover to cut algae food sources.
  • Calcium hardness: Watch for 200 to 400 ppm to avoid scaling if ash raises mineral content.

How often to test while ash is present


Test at least twice daily during active ashfall, once in the morning and once in the evening.


Continue frequent checks until chemistry holds steady over several days. Then return to your normal weekly schedule.


Safe shock choices and stepwise dosing guidance


Remove as much ash as you can before shocking. Skim, vacuum to waste, and clean baskets and filters first. Otherwise you waste chemicals and overload the filter.


For chloramine and organic load, non-chlorine oxidizer (potassium monopersulfate) quickly breaks combined chlorine without long swim bans. It will not treat active algae.


Calcium hypochlorite is powerful for algae control but raises pH and calcium. Dichlor is gentler on pH but adds stabilizer.


As a guideline, routine shock aims for about 10 ppm free chlorine. Severe algae may need 20 to 30 ppm. Follow product labels and pool volume calculations.


A rough rule of thumb from common product strengths: 1 gallon of 12.5% liquid chlorine per 10,000 gallons raises free chlorine by roughly 12.5 ppm. One pound of granular cal-hypo per 10,000 gallons is a common starting point for granular products.


Shock at dusk or night to avoid sunlight loss, and run filtration continuously for 24 to 48 hours after treatment to clear oxidized waste.

  • Robotic cleaners trap fine ash inside their internal baskets, so they keep particles out of your pump and main filter.
  • Empty robotic baskets often and use ultra-fine filter inserts when available. Clogged internal filters reduce performance and strain the motor.
  • Manual vacuuming gives you control and is ideal for concentrated ash patches, especially when you vacuum to waste to remove ash from the system.
  • Move the vacuum head slowly in overlapping lines to avoid re-suspending ash. Stop and let particles settle if the water clouds during cleaning.
  • Suction-side cleaners pull ash into the main filter and skimmer. They can clog baskets and media quickly during heavy ash events.
  • If you use a suction-side cleaner, check and empty baskets daily and be prepared to backwash more frequently.
